Car Rental Tips for Tourists Visiting Northern Ontario
Northern Ontario is vast and beautiful โ and a rental car is the best way to see it. Keep these tips in mind before you arrive.
Distances are bigger than they look
Towns can be hours apart. Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie is ~3 hours; to Thunder Bay, closer to 11. Plan fuel stops and don't assume services every exit.
Watch for wildlife
Moose and deer are a real hazard, especially at dawn and dusk. Slow down in marked zones โ a moose collision is serious.
Book ahead โ fleets are small
Outside Sudbury, North Bay and the Soo, rental inventory is limited. Reserve your vehicle class before you fly, particularly SUVs and vans.
Plan for the season
Summer is cottage-country busy; winter demands AWD and winter tires. If you're visiting NovโApr, read our winter tire guide.
Bring the right documents
A valid licence (plus an International Driving Permit if yours isn't in English/French) and a credit card. See international permits explained.
