Car Rental Glossary
Know the lingo before you sign.
- CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)
- An optional waiver that limits your financial responsibility if the rental is damaged in a collision. Not technically insurance, but functions similarly.
- LDW (Loss Damage Waiver)
- Like CDW but also covers theft of the vehicle. Often bundled with CDW at the counter.
- Excess / Deductible
- The amount you still pay out of pocket toward damage even when a waiver applies. A lower excess costs more per day.
- Unlimited Mileage
- No per-kilometre charge โ drive as far as you like. Common in Canada but always confirm, especially on one-way and long-term rentals.
- One-Way Fee
- A surcharge for returning the vehicle to a different location than pickup (e.g., Sudbury to Toronto).
- Young Driver Fee
- A daily surcharge for renters under 25 (sometimes under 21 minimum). Varies by agency.
- Authorized / Additional Driver
- Anyone besides the renter permitted to drive. Must usually be added (and may carry a fee) to stay insured.
- Hold / Pre-Authorization
- A temporary charge placed on your credit card as a deposit. Released after return, minus any charges.
- Fuel Policy
- The rule for returning fuel. "Full-to-full" is usually cheapest; "pre-purchase" or refuelling fees cost more.
