Driver Licensing (ServiceOntario)
Most agencies require a full Class G licence held for at least one year. International visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.
Rental Insurance in Ontario
Your personal auto policy or a premium credit card may already cover rentals. Check before buying the counter waiver (CDW/LDW). When in doubt, the waiver buys peace of mind.
Winter Driving (Nov–Apr)
Northern Ontario winters are serious. Request winter tires, keep an emergency kit, and consider AWD. Highways 17, 69 and 11 can close in storms — check 511on.ca before you travel.
Greater Sudbury Airport (YSB)
Several major brands operate desks at YSB. Airport pickups are convenient but carry concession fees — compare against a city pickup if you are not flying in.
Roadside Assistance & CAA
Most rentals include basic roadside help; confirm the provider’s emergency number at pickup. CAA North & East Ontario serves the region for members.
Toll & Highway Info
Northern Ontario highways are toll-free. For conditions and closures across the region, Ontario 511 (511on.ca) is the official source.
